The MVP and Best Goal awards of the 1st matchday were awarded to Kostas Fortounis of Olympiacos, who topped the competition organised by Super League Greece, the Panhellenic Association of Professional Players (PSAP) and NOVA. The awards were presented by Mr Savvas Theodoridis.
After the ceremony, the Olympiacos player stated:
"Both the team and I kicked off the season well. We move on. We have difficult matches ahead of us. There is the Champions League where we were drawn to play in a very difficult group. But we have a very good team. We deserve to be where we are and we will prove it."
Mr Theodoridis says that in particular in the Karaiskakis stadium Olympiacos can make it against any opponent. Do you agree?
"Yes, as we have proven in the previous year, it is very difficult to lose when playing home. We will try to do the same no matter which club we play against. We need to work in order to appear improved every Sunday since this is a new team. New players have joined us and we want to have a uniform team."
Mr Savvas Theodoridis stated the following:
"Kostas is the best player in Greece, no question about it. He proves this especially when he plays in important matches. I am thrilled we were drawn to play against great clubs. Because Olympiacos belongs in the top tier, this tier. And I expect Kostas will stun everyone. I have been in Olympiacos for 62 years and it's very hard to lose when playing home in Karaiskakis. When I was playing, we did not lose any games against the great European clubs. Nothing is impossible. These are of course huge clubs. Barcelona sold a player for 222 million, I mean what can we do against this. But we will try. If the fans help and the players understand that they play eleven against eleven… Then money doesn't matter. Sometimes it fools you. The important thing is to have a uniform team. And with players like Kostas, who I think will be stunning that day, I have no doubt that we will achieve amazing results. It's a great honour for Greek football that we are among the great clubs and were not drawn to play against teams coming, for example, from Azerbaijan. I am very happy about it. Write this the way I say it: it will be really hard to break us, really had, immensely hard. I've known Olympiacos for a long time, like no one else does. It will be really hard to break us."
